MAYER DOLORES C. (FAZIO) AGE 9...

MAYER DOLORES C. (FAZIO) Age 94, of Crafton, formerly of Bellevue, passed peacefully on Thursday, March 5, 2015. Wife of the late Frank J. Mayer; beloved mother of Michael (Cheri), Francis Frank (Linda) and Thomas (Patricia) Mayer, Mary Ann Mimi (Robert) DiTommaso; ten grandchildren; ten great- grandchildren. Predeceased by her siblings. Dolores attended Mt. Mercy College (Carlow) and retired from Blue Cross and Blue Shield. After a very minor fall in her apartment, Dolores went to Reformed Presbyterian Nursing Home for, what was thought to be, a short-stay Rehabilitation. This was to ensure that her ability to walk, and continue living in her apartment, which she loved. Life Pittsburgh, which she also loved, had provided Dolores the opportunity to live in her own community, have a Vibrant life, and interact everyday with her extended family. For whatever reason, the fall sapped her of strength and then her many medical issues that had accumulated over the years, simply took over. Dolores died quietly in her sleep, having been surrounded by her loving family and friends. Visitation will be held Monday 4-6:30 p.m., at which time a Blessing Service will be held in the funeral home chapel. There will be a private interment at a later date. Arrangements by SCHEPNER - McDERMOTT FUNERAL HOME, INC., 165 Noble Ave., Crafton, PA 15205. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Life Pittsburgh in Dolores' name, 875 Greentree Rd., 1st Floor, Pgh., PA 15220. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb

PHILBRICK MARIANNE DENNIS AGE ...
PHILBRICK MARIANNE DENNIS Age 83, died peacefully at her home in Centerville, Massachusetts, on March 3, 2015. She was born on June 21, 1931, the daughter of Gerald and Jennie Dennis of Evanston, Illinois. Marianne grew up in Evanston and later in Rosemont, Pennsylvania where she graduated from the Baldwin School. Then came Middlebury College in Vermont, where she majored in Political Science and developed a lifelong interest in local government. She married Thomas Philbrick in 1953, bore two sons, and managed to shape her life as an academic wife into one that engaged her own ranging concerns. During her 22 years in Pittsburgh, she earned accreditation as an elementary school teacher and taught kindergarten and first grade in the most impoverished and challenging districts of the city. Always a deeply religious person, she pursued her seeker's path, first as a Quaker and then as a member of the Episcopal Church. And in Pittsburgh, as elsewhere, she delighted in the scuffle of local politics, serving as a worker on campaigns, sitting on party committees, and being chosen as a Judge of Elections, the only office to which she ever aspired. Marianne had a rich interior life as well. She was an adventurous and insightful reader of poetry, fiction, history, and theology. She particularly admired Wordsworth, Hardy, Iris Murdoch, and Albert Camus. In retirement she took on Hugo, Balzac, and Zola in French and explored the plays of August Wilson both in print and on the stage. During that retirement on Cape Cod, Marianne also carried on the other interests that defined her life. She maintained her membership in the League of Women Voters, served on the Barnstable Town Democratic Committee, volunteered as a tutor at the Barnstable-West Barnstable Elementary School, and was a devoted member of St. Mary's Church. But now she had the freedom to travel in Europe, making at least one hiking expedition in France each year. Through it all, Marianne was a deeply supportive and loving wife and mother, always interesting, wholly lacking in pretensions or affectations, and profoundly honest. And through the last 17 years of her life, she endured with great courage and grace the slow advance of congestive heart failure. Although her heart grew weaker, her great spirit never did. Marianne is survived and remembered with love by her husband; her sons, Nathaniel and Samuel; her grandchildren, Jennifer Philbrick McArdle, Ethan Philbrick, Lillian Philbrick, and Abigail Philbrick; and her great-granddaughter, Lydia McArdle. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marianne's memory to one of her own most respected non-profits, Duffy Health Center, 94 Main Street, Hyannis, MA 02601. The burial service will be private. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Rte. 6A, Barnstable. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
