FERRACO MILDRED T. “MIL” Age 92, passed away peacefully Friday, December 19, 2014, at the Humility House, in Austintown, Ohio. She was with several members of her family at her time of passing. Mil was born September 28, 1922, in Pittsburgh, to her late parents, Gustave and Sadie Kowalski. She was preceded in death by her husband, James J. Ferraco. She was one of eight children and left to celebrate her life are brothers, Robert, William and James; and sisters, Sherlaine and Carol. She was preceded in death by her brother, Raymond Kowalski; and sister, Ruth (Kowalski) Mitchell. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Jim (Sue) Ferraco of Colorado, Terri (Terry) Schade of Ohio, Rick (Andrea) Ferraco of California, and Glenn (Paula) Ferraco of California. Mil was also the proud grandmother to 12 grandchildren, Michael Ferraco, Michele (Ferraco) Blanco, and Nicholas Ferraco, Megan Schade and Christopher Schade, Alexandra Ferraco, Lauren-Grace Ferraco, Andrew Ferraco, and Matthew Ferraco, Nathaniel Ferraco, Geneva (Gandolfo) Behnke, and Angelo Gandolfo. She was blessed with eight great-grandchildren, Aspen, Zachery, Joshua, Cody, Brayden, Tyler, Emily and Parker. Mil will always be known for her love of family. She especially looked forward to and cherished the holidays and gatherings we had. Her life was defined by family and all of us were blessed to have had her there for so many years. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to Humility House, Austintown, Ohio, and its staff, for the tender, loving, and special care provided to our mother during her stay there. The staff was very professional, caring and attentive to all her needs and that of the family. A Memorial Mass will be held in Gibsonia at St. Richards Church, March 21, 2015, at 9 a.m. Mil will be laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery in O'Hara Township. GRAY ROJEANNE ROSSITER Age 89, of Pineville, NC, formerly of Gibsonia, PA, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2015, surrounded by her family. Born on December 11, 1925, she was the daughter of Jessie McIntire and Richard Rossiter. Rojeanne earned a degree in nursing from Shadyside Hospital of Pittsburgh and a Bachelor of Science degree from Slippery Rock University. She worked at the Richland Medical Center from 1960 to 1967 and the Pine-Richland school district as a school nurse from 1967 to 1983. After retiring, Rojeanne and her husband, Richard Gray, moved to Kill Devil Hills, NC, Winter Haven, FL, Duluth, GA, then spent her last four years in Pineville, NC. Surviving her are her daughters, Roberta Gray of Gibsonia, PA, Carole (John) Nelson of Indian Land, SC; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great- granddaughter. GORDON IRA H. A businessman, philanthropist and WW2 veteran dies at Allegheny General Hospital on March 2, 2015. He was 92. Born in Cleveland, he moved to Pittsburgh in 1950 and was married to his loving wife of 65 years, Nanette Lhormer Gordon who survives him. Mr. Gordon was born in the roaring 20s and his formative years were during the Great Depression. He developed an early love of aviation, watching barnstormers perform at local fairs. He attended Miami of Ohio, but when war broke out, he enlisted and trained to be a pilot at Pensacola, FL. He served with distinction as a Torpedo Bomber Pilot in the Pacific Campaign. In 1950 he started Swift Homes, one of the first pre-fab housing companies. It grew to national prominence. These homes of innovative design still dot the tri state area today. In 1982 he embarked on a second career starting General American Corp. He grew GAC to be a strong regional player in the mortgage servicing industry. After rapid expansion, in the year 2000 he successfully sold GAC to a national Venture Capital Firm. Not content with retirement, he continued to invest in startup companies and real estate until his dying day. Mr. Gordon served on the Board of Directors, and donated to many charitable organizations. These include but are not limited to: Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh, Allegheny Valley School, City Theater, Pittsburgh Symphony, Carnegie Museum, and Rodef Shalom Congregation. With his wife Nanette, he loved to travel the world. These trips included travel with family, YPO and CEO. Mr. Gordon led early business trips to the USSR and China. For his 80th birthday - he took his entire family to Africa. Above all he was a family man. He is survived by his wife, Nanette Lhormer Gordon; his sons, Scott (Ilana) Gordon, Peter (Robin) Gordon; and his daughter, Jill (David) Stein; he is also survived by eight grandchildren; one great- grandchild; and a niece, Karen Kessler. Services at Rodef Shalom Temple, 4905 Fifth Avenue (at Morewood), Oakland on Thursday, March 5, 2015, at 2 p.m. Visitation at Temple one and one half hour prior to services (12:30 - 2 p.m.). McCLOSKEY RICHARD C. Age 74, of Bridgewater, MA and formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, died unexpectedly on Feb 27, 2015. Rich was born and raised in the city of Pittsburgh and was the loving son of the late William J. and Hilda E. (Strzondala) McCloskey. He started working at an early age and joined Teamsters Local 926 in 1966. He married Helen C. (Ruggiero) McCloskey on June 8, 1963, and they raised their children in Penn Hills, PA. Rich loved working and for many years was a union mechanic and parts supervisor for Ryder Truck. His passions outside of work were old cars, his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins, his dog, Annabelle, and most importantly his family; especially his grandkids. Rich was a simple man who enjoyed his time with family and friends. Loving husband of Helen C. McCloskey of Pittsburgh; and devoted father of Denise M. McCloskey of Taunton and Deborah L. Walter, Jr. for 67 years; daughter of the late William and Alma Pietsch of Beltzhoover; sister of the late William (Ann) Pietsch, the late Helen (Ray) Sloss, and the late Ruth (Clifford) Zumbrook; beloved mother of Susan (James) Dombrosky of Scott Twp., the late Sandra Walter, William D. Walter of Pennsbury Village, Ronald (Judith) Walter of Baldwin; beloved grandmother of Ronald T. Walter, Laura (John) Stubna, and Joseph J. Walter; sister-in-law to the late Carl (Helen) Walter; aunt to many nieces and nephews. She lived for her family as a loving and devoted wife, mother and very proud grandmother. In retirement, she led an active and joy-filled life with Bill, biking, boating, dancing and especially as a "Snowbird" in Florida for over 20 years. She enjoyed animals and loved her schnauzers. She was a talented seamstress, enjoyed knitting and painting. Her sweet smile and loving nature will be missed by everyone who knew her. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to Josephine (Mussari) Stempkowski; loving father to Nancy (Bill) Maslakowski of Robinson and Maureen (Pat) DeFeo of West Grove; cherished grandfather to Nicholas, Sarah and Michael Maslakowski, and Kelvin, Morgan and Cammy DeFeo; brother of Casimir, Eugene, Thomas and the late Helen Weinhofer, Sophie Stortecky, Stanley, Edmund and Joseph; and many dear nieces and nephews. SAULTERS JAMES "JIM" CLIFTON Passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, age 65, of McCandless Twp. Jim was a gentle, funny, kind-hearted man. He was a genuine and able outdoorsman, who could navigate whitewater, climb mountains, cross-country ski and tell a good story around a campfire with a wickedly wry sense of humor. His generous nature led him to quietly gift many of his possessions to those who admired them. Jim was born on February 22, 1950, and raised in Pittsburgh, moving to West Virginia to work for 20 years. He had recently returned to his boyhood home, where he passed away. After attending Peebles Elementary School, North Allegheny High School and Drexel University, Jim began his career as an inspector for a local food safety company. However, the desire for outdoor adventures led him to become a guide and a manager of Wilderness Voyageurs, a whitewater rafting company in Ohiopyle, PA. He later was employed by SuperValu, Inc. in Charleston, WV, where he oversaw distribution, safety and efficiency at their food warehouse facility. Recently he had been planning a long bicycle trip on his beloved recumbent bike as well as a canoe trip to Raystown. His mother, Grace Santmeyer Saulters; and his father, George Clifton Saulters, preceded him in death. He is survived by a nationwide network of good friends, who shared his love of the out of doors. Jim gave his volunteer time to restoring old railroad beds to bicycle trails. HSIEH CHIAO-MIN Professor Emeritus of Geography at the University of Pittsburgh passed away February 26, 2015, in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was 96 years old. Born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, in China, Chiao-min, the youngest of four children, was a proud graduate of Zhejiang University in 1941. He arrived in the United States in the late 1940s with his wife, the late Jean Kan Hsieh, to pursue his doctoral studies in geography at Syracuse University. Chiao-min received his PhD in 1953. Unable to return to his homeland in the tumultuous 1950s, Chiao-min ultimately became a U.S. citizen and a world-wide traveler. Throughout his long distinguished career, Chiao-min taught at numerous universities, including Dartmouth College, University of Leeds, Catholic University, Hong Kong University, National Taiwan Normal University, the Chinese Culture University, and his alma mater, Zhejiang University. He was awarded a Fulbright Research Professorship three times and was a senior fellow for National Endowment for the Humanities. He joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh in 1969, ultimately retiring from there in 1992. Chiao-min authored numerous scholarly books and atlases including: "China: Ageless Land and Countless People" (1967), "Taiwan Ilha Formosa: a Geography in Perspective" (1964), "Atlas of China" (1973), "Changing China: a Geographic Appraisal" (with Max Lu) (2003), and "China, a Provincial Atlas" (with Jean Kan Hsieh) (1995). His last book, "Race the Rising Sun" (2009) was a personal account, co-authored with his wife, Jean. The book describes their Zhejiang University years and the university's evacuation from the Japanese occupation of Hangzhou during the Second Sino-Japanese War. A learned, proud, competitive and determined man during his lifetime, Chiao-min was a passionate Chinese chess (xiangqi) player and a keen follower of basketball, especially of the University of Pittsburgh team. Loving husband of his wife of 65 years, who passed away in 2012, and his two children who survive him, daughter, Eileen Hsieh (Michael Tomenga); and son, An-Ping Hsieh (Sarah Lessels Hsieh). He had a genuine love and soft spot for, and was proudest of, his five grandchildren, Brian, Andrew and Kyra Tomenga, and Jessica and Alexander Hsieh. No memorial services will be held.
