BARBARA J. HAIGH 2/27/31 - 7/17/20 Barbara J. Haigh, a snowbird who recently returned to Pittsburgh, passed at home on July 17, 2020. She was 89. Barbara started out life in Cranston, Rhode Island and attended the University of Rhode Island along with her sister, Suzanne Haigh Beaton. Barbara received her undergraduate degree from University of Nebraska and her Master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Barbara taught school in the City of Pittsburgh schools as a reading specialist for 35 years. She retired from teaching and moved to Jupiter, Florida in 1991. She volunteered at the Riviera Beach Elementary School and spent time with her mother, Dorothy. She was also an avid golfer. She met Sam Adams golfing in Florida. They enjoyed a wonderful relationship until he passed in April of 2016. One of her highlights was the incredible feat of making a hole in one on her 85th birthday. Barbara was an intrepid traveler and enjoyed many trips to Europe with her sister, her mother and also her niece, Jo. Barbara would also travel west to Oregon and Washington to visit with her son, Mark, and his family. On the return she made sure to stop in Pittsburgh so she could visit her son, Paul, and his family. In March of 2018, she moved back to Pittsburgh, choosing to reside in Lighthouse Pointe, an independent living community. There she thrived, and formed friendships with her neighbors and the staff. She enjoyed her book club, trips to the theater, and spirited conversations at the dinner table. Barbara savored her proximity to her Pittsburgh family and looked forward to Sunday dinners with Paul and his family, Steelers' games and always helpful iPad lessons from Taylor. Barbara is survived by her sons, Mark and Paul Mazeski, their wives, Laney and Cheryl; and six grandchildren, Zach, Katie, Hannah, Robby, Morgan and Taylor. Also surviving is her brother, Steven Haigh and his wife, Doris and their children, Jonathan and Gretchen. After her sister, Sue, died in 1996, she essentially adopted her children, Larry, Scott, Tricia, Andrew, Laurie and Jo and became a grandmother to their children, Kye, Khynna, Laird, Colin, Jack, Travis, Shannon, Alison, Avery and Erin. But in reality, as Taylor says, she was the adopted grandmother of many other kids, as all children loved her and she loved them too. The family thanks the staff and her friends at Lighthouse Pointe for their care, love and hospitality. Memorial donations can be made to The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation. The family will hold a private memorial service. Arrangements entrusted to BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION & ALTERNATIVE SERVICES INC., Oakmont Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
