LONG JANE ELIZABETH 94, died of natural causes at the Hospice House in Winston-Salem, NC on June 18, 2013. She was born December 27, 1918, in Memphis, TN to Gertrude and Glenn Estes. Jane grew up in Franklin, LA and attended Whitworth College in Mississippi. She married Jack Long in 1939 and they were together 58 years. She was a devoted wife to Jack and a loving mother to their beloved son, Herb. She loved her family and always aimed to please, whether it was baking cookies and other treats, or simply seeing that everyone was cared for. She also volunteered at various hospitals over the years. The saying goes, "Behind every successful man there is a good woman," and Jane was a key partner in her husband's successful career with American Bridge Division of US Steel and Pitt- Des Moines. She was extremely proud of the bridges Jack and his companies built and delighted in sharing stories about each one with her family. "Honey," as she was affectionately called, never forgot her southern roots, enjoying Cajun coffee and Louisiana gumbo. She was a traditionalist and liked her t-shirt with the slogan "I am old-fashioned and proud of it." Jane was preceded in her death by her husband, Jack; her parents; her sister, Katherine; and her two brothers, Ralph and Glenn. She is survived by her son, Herb, and his wife, Randi, of Lafayette, CA; two grandchildren, Melissa McGuire and Kent Long; four great-grandchildren, Amanda, Emily Anne, Ashley, and Eric McGuire; her son-in-law, Andrew McGuire, and Kent's partner, Vanessa O'Neill. Also remembered are her nieces, Kip Day, Susie and Barbara Estes (and their mother Barbara Estes), Leonora Estes, Chris, Tricia, and Kelly Estes, and the Mallett family. There will be a Memorial Service at Memorial Oaks, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX on July 6 at 12:30 p.m. Jane will be interred there with her parents and husband. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Clemmons United Methodist Church, PO Box 829, Clemmons, NC 27012 and Kay B Reynolds Hospice House, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to thank the staff of Bermuda Village in Advance and Hospice Carecenter for their loving and compassionate care of Jane. Send condolences at post-gazette.com/gb
